Dr Philip Wickham

Dr Phil Wickham is Curator of The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum at the University of Exeter, the leading museum of moving image history in the UK. The museum holds over 94,000 items and its holdings create a people’s history of moving images, with an emphasis on the audience and those involved creatively in filmmaking. Collections held at the museum, such as the Rank Scripts Collection, and photographs related to continuity supervisor Pamela Davies, show how women’s screen histories can be reconsidered and presented to new audiences.  

Phil also teaches Film Studies at Exeter and has written and lectured extensively on British film and television. His publications include The Likely Lads in the BFI TV Classics series (2008), Understanding Television Texts (BFI, 2009), Bill Douglas A Film Artist  (co-edited with Amelia Watts, University of Exeter Press, 2022) and contributions on research and engagement with film collections in the article ‘Living Film Histories Researching at The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum’ in Journal of British Film and Television and within Musei del Cinema e Patrimonio Audiovisivo Prospettive a Confronto (Kaplan 2025).
