Dr Katie Crosson

Katie Crosson is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Curation on this project, based at the University of Exeter. Prior to this, she was a Visiting Lecturer at Royal Holloway, University of London (2024-2025), and a Research Assistant on the ‘Ghost Town’ project at the University of Warwick (PI: Prof. Helen Wheatley) (2018-2019). She gained her AHRC-funded PhD from Royal Holloway and the British Film Institute in 2024 with a thesis titled ‘Replay for Today: Re-Visiting Play for Today (1970-1984) at Fifty’. Her research explores critical approaches to curation, including practices of de-canonisation; feminist screen theory; realism(s) and emotion; film and television histories, especially in relation to marginalisation; representations of violence against women on-screen; and the relationship between aesthetics and ideology. Her article, co-authored with Tom May, ‘Spaces for Criticism: The Play for Today Viewing Group on Work, Gender and the Body in The Bevellers (1974)and Not for the Likes of Us (1980) was published in 2025 in the journal Critical Studies in Television. She has also published with the BFI (2020, 2021, 2023), BBC Histories (2020) and Critical Studies in Television: Reviews (2025). In 2020, she guest curated the virtual exhibition ‘Play for Today at 50’ with the BFI and the BBC, and co-programmed the Southbank season of the same name. She holds an MA in Film and Screen Studies from Goldsmiths, University of London (2018), and a BA in Film Studies from Warwick (2017).
